Abstract
482,478. Winding wire. ELEVATOR SUPPLIES CO., Inc. Jan. 20, 1937, No. 1732. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1936. [Class 120 (ii)] In a machine for spooling or winding wire in which the spool spindle is driven at a progressively diminishing speed as the radius of the wire on the spool increases with successive layers, the spindle is driven through a variable speed gear which is adjusted by means comprising a member successively displaced from the axis of the spindle through contacts with successive layers of wire as they are wound and return movement of the displaceable member towards the spindle is prevented so that it cannot move towards the axis of the spindle to follow any irregularities of the wound wire with respect to the axis of the spindle ; the displaceable member may directly or indirectly actuate the speed gear and may be moved directly or indirectly by the wire on the spool. As shown the wire from a drawing apparatus 10 passes over a tension pulley 210, through a traverse device 115 to the spool S on the spindle 18 which is driven from the shaft 20 by a belt 39 and expanding V-pulley 41, the movable plate 42 of which is fixed to a sleeve 44 slidable on the spindle 18 and having a threaded part engaging a fixed nut 45. The wire on the spool is engaged by a roller 120 at the end of an arm 50 fixed to a shaft 52 carrying a toothed sector 54 engaging a gear 55 on the sleeve 44 so that as the arm 50 moves away from the spindle 18, as each fresh layer of wire is'wound on the spool, the plate 42 of the V-pulley is moved towards the fixed plate thereof to cause a reduction in the speed of the spindle and give a substantially constant peripheral-speed to the wire being wound on the spool. Return movement of the arm 50 towards the spindle is prevented by means of a pawl 64, carried by an arm 60 on the shaft 52, engaging a fixed toothed sector 66; the pawl may be made with a number of teeth so that any return movement is limited to a fraction of the length of a tooth of the sector 66. In a modification the arm 50 carries a pivoted finger which contacts with the wire and carries one member of a make-andbreak device in circuit with a solenoid, the finger moving to break the circuit when a fresh layer is started and cause movement of the solenoid which then actuates a pawl engaging a ratchet on the shaft 52 ; rotation of the shaft moves the sleeve 44 and also the arm 50 with the pivoted finger away from the spindle 18. In a further modification, the arm 50 is mounted on a separate shaft, movement of the pivoted finger causing actuation of the ratchet and consequently of the sleeve 44 which also causes a cam engaging an arm on the shaft carrying the arm 50 to move the arm from the spindle 18.
