Abstract

625,271. Electron beam valves. METSON, G. H. Aug. 1, 1946, No. 22956. [Class 39 (i)] In a beam deflection tube the transit time of the electrons through the deflection plates is increased by using crossed magnetic and electric fields so that the electrons follow a cycloidal path from cathode .to anode. In Fig. 1 a steady magnetic field is applied in the direction shown. An electric field at right-angles to this is applied by two plates 12. Deflection plates 6 enable the beam to be deflected on to one of the anodes 8. The cathode is a copper cylinder coated with alkaline earth oxides and is supported from one of the plates 12, Fig. 5 (not shown). The anodes may be two plates separated by a narrow slot centrally placed with respect to the undeflected beam. In another form, Fig. 6, the electric field is established between a central wire 21 and a curved outer surface 22 coaxial with the wire ; a magnetic field is applied along the axis. 23 is the cathode, 24 the anodes, and 25 the deflection plates. In either embodiment small negative potentials may be applied to the deflection plates to assist focusing, or special focusing electrodes may be used. A grid electrode may be provided and may be adjacent to the anodes.
