Abstract
624,980. Changing gauge of wheels. BROWN TRACTORS, Ltd., D., BROWN, D., and ASHFIELD, H. E. July 21, 1947, No. 19417. [Class 108 (ii)] In means for enabling the track width of a vehicle to be adjusted, a road-wheel is bolted to a hub secured on a splined shaft located in the splined bore of a driving sleeve, rotatable and located by bearings within a housing secured to the end of the axle casing of the vehicle, variation in track width being effected by sliding the splined shaft endwise within the driving sleeve. In the construction shown, a vehicle wheel a is bolted to a hub b which is secured on a splined shaft c. The shaft c is located in the splined bore of a driving sleeve d rotatable in bearings e, e, in a housing f integral with the axle casing g of the vehicle. The sleeve d carries a gear-wheel j meshing with a pinion k on a driven axle m. The sleeve d is provided with a tubular extension d<SP>1</SP> having a screwed cap d<SP>2</SP> through which projects an adjusting screw p having thrust collars n, n, and a non-circular head n<SP>1</SP> for the reception of a spanner or handle. The other end of the screw engages with a nut r carried by the shaft c which is moved inwardly or outwardly of the sleeve d by rotation of the head n<SP>1</SP>. The shaft c is locked in the desired position by means of a looking screw or screws h, carried either by the sleeve d, or as shown, by a bush i mounted thereon, which screw or screws engage a flat or flats on the shaft c. Preferably, both wheels of each pair are adjustable. The wheels may be adjusted independently or provision made for simultaneous adjustment in opposite directions.
