Abstract

715,310. Steering vehicles. MAY, C. H. March 16, 1951 [March'21, 1950], No. 22863/53. Divided out of 702,278, [Group XXXII]. Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXXII] In a vehicle a steering gear has a horizontal rack parallel to the joining line between the two front wheel steering pivots and each end of the rack is associated with a steering arm, the arrangement being such that with the wheels in their straight ahead position the projected lines of the steering arm would intersect on the axis of the vehicle at a distance forward of the joining line equal to the wheel base. As shown the steering column is formed of telescopic sections 113, 115 housing telescopic shafts 112, 116, the shaft 112 carrying the steering wheel 110 and the shaft 116 a pinion 118. The pinion 118 meshes with the rack 120 housed in a member 122 which is rotatably mounted in the vehicle frame so that the rake of the steering column can be adjusted, its length being adjustable by means of the telescopic sections and shafts. The ends of the rake are ball jointed at 126 to steering arm members 127 slidably received in sleeves 128. The members 127, 128 are inclined forwardly so that their projected lines intersect a distance equal to the wheel base forwardly of the line joining the pivots of the front wheels 130. The sleeves 128 are each connected to a shaft 137 which is rotatably fixed relative to a piston 132 secured to the wheel 130 so that the wheel is steerably deflected by rotation of the sleeve 128 about the axis of the shaft 137. The piston 132 is received in a cylinder 133 carried by the vehicle frame 135 for suspension purposes (see Group XXXII).
