Abstract
764,881. Steering vehicles. OPEL AKT.- GES., A. Jan. 19, 1955 [Feb. 6, 1954], No. 1629/55. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXVIII] A steering linkage 16 for a motor vehicle comprises a tie rod 17 having spaced connections to a rocker arm 22 and an idler arm 20, and a pair of track rod connections between the idler arm and rocker arm connections, a pair of track rods 15 each connected to one of the track rod connections and to a steering arm 13, that portion of the tie rod between the track rod connections being adjustable in length to adjust the toe-in of the wheels 11. The steering arms 13 on the independently mounted wheels 11 are ball jointed to the track rods 15 which are ball jointed at 18 to the tie rod 17 the central portion of which is in the form of a turn-buckle, see Fig. 2, comprising a central sheath screwed onto oppositely threaded portions 29 of the rod. The sheath is slotted axially at each end with lugs 34 projecting from each side of each slot to receive bolts 33 to hold the sheath locked. The portions 31 of the tie rod overlap to prevent relative rotation. The steering linkage is assembled on the front cross frame member 12 before this is assembled on rubber blocks on the side frame rails of the vehicle and the central turn-buckle of the tie rod is adjusted to give the requisite " toe-in " of the wheels. When assembled on the side frame rails and with the wheels in the straight ahead position the portion 21 of the tie rod, which has a turn-buckle similar to the central portion, is adjusted so that the rocker arm 22 of the steering gear box 24 is in its central position parallel to the steering shaft 25. The portion 19 may also have an adjustable turn-buckle to obtain parallelism of the idler arm 20 and the rocker arm 22.
