Abstract
511,766. Mounting and steering motorvehicle road wheels. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., and OAK, A. V. April 25, 1939, No. 12376. [Class 79 (v)] A wheel mounting and steering unit for independently-sprung wheels comprises a transverse member a adapted to be secured to the vehicle frame or body (not shown), transverse wheelsuspension links b pivoted on longitudinal pivots to the member a and connected to the stub axles c, and a three-part track-rod having a middle part g slidable in a guide f on the member a and connected by joints i to the end parts h which are pivoted to the steering arms e of the stub axles c. The whole forms a unit which can be assembled and adjusted before inclusion in the vehicle structure. The ends of the guide f may form stops to limit the movements of the track rod and therefore of the steering wheels. The joints i are so related to the pivots of the links b that the steering is not appreciably affected by movements of the links when the steering gear is in its straightahead position. The drop arm l of the steering gear k is connected either by a link m to one of the steering arms e or by a link n to one end of the middle part of the track rod. The suspension links b may be of any convenient spring-controlled kind.
