[Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] In a stop cylinder flat bed printing machine correct registration of sheets on the lay board is ensured by a backward movement of the impression cylinder to effect front registration and by a simultaneous operation of the side lay mechanism to effect lateral registration. An impression cylinder 1 carries a roller 6 which is engaged by a catch fork 5 to arrest the anticlockwise rotation of the cylinder driven by a reciprocating rack 2 and a pinion 3. The catch fork 5 is reciprocated with a bracket 7 sliding on the machine frame and is driven by conjugate cams 11 and 12 which engage rollers 9 and 10 on the bracket 7. The cams are provided with slightly rising profiles 15 in place of dwell portions concentric with axis 13 so that a slight backward movement is imparted to the fork 5 to cause a slight clockwise rotation of the cylinder in order that its front lays 22 will register a sheet 17 on the lay board 18. Left- and right-side lays 19 are adjustably mounted on sleeves 33, the left sleeve being fixed to a shaft 20 and the right sleeve being slidably mounted thereon. The shaft 20 carries a bracket 37 which is moved by a spring-loaded pin 38 engaging a cam face 21 integral with the gear 3 to effect movement of the left-side lay 19 to the right and the rightside lay to the left to register the sheets. The right-side lay 19 is moved against a spring 45 by a shaft 39 fixed to the bracket 37 and through a pivoted lever 41. Gripper bars 23 carried by the cylinder are operated by a usual cam roller 26 which engages a cam surface 29.
