Class 100(2) In a high speed platen printing machine the sheet-feeding arm 18 is operated by the oscillating motion of the platen 1. The platen is mounted on a frame 6, and is swung about its axis by means of a crank 2, connecting rod 3, and toggle levers 4, 5 pivoted, respectively, to the frame at 45 and to the platen at 46. The platen 1 rocks a shaft 9 (not shown) through a link 7 and a lever 8 secured to the shaft, and a second lever 10 (not shown) secured to the shaft has a block thereon engageable in an open-ended slot 12a in a triangular slotted arm 12 pivoted at 49 in a separate frame 13. The frame 13 carries the sheetfeeding and delivery mechanism, and is mounted on wheels so that it can readily be moved away from the platen &c. frame 6, the block and open slot 12a means facilitating ready connection and disconnection of the frames. Thus the motion of the platen 1 rocks the arm 12 about its pivot 49. A link 14 is pivoted at one end in the slot in the arm 12, and at the other end to a two-armed lever 22, pivoted at 63, and a two-armed lever 15, pivoted at 62. The upper end of lever 15 is pivoted at 54 to the' sheet-feeding arm 18. The lower end of the lever 22 is connected by a link 21 to a bell-crank lever 20, freely mounted on a driven cross-shaft 29 to which is pivoted an arcuate lever 16 having a roller engaging a cam 19 secured to the shaft 29. The lever 16 and roller are urged towards the cam 19 by a spring 23, pivoted lever 25, and spring 24. A rod 28 is pivoted to the lever 16 and to the sheet-feeding arm 18, so that the cam 19 modifies the path of movement of the arm 18: this arm movement can also be modified by adjusting the ends of the link 14 in the slot 51 in the arm 12 and a slot in the lever 22. The arrangement is such that a rest period of the sheetfeeding arm 18 on the sheet pile, equal to a quarter of the time of an operating cycle of the machine, is achieved by a combination of three dead centres. In this position, the crank 2 and connecting rod 3 are in alignment, the levers 4, 5 are horizontal, and the link 7 is in alignment with the axis of the platen 1. The movable frame 13 can be clamped in its operating position by a pair of forks on the frame 6 engaging a pair of rotatable blocks on the frame 13. The blocks are secured on a cross-shaft which can be rocked by a lever to release the frame 13. The shaft 29 has secured thereon a toothed wheel engaged by a pinion which is driven by a sprocket chain from a motor-driven shaft on the frame 6. Specification 581,554 is referred to.
