ROTARY PRINTING MACHINE.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, An'rncn B'unnoUoHns Evans and liirmonn PERCIVAL PAYNE, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, respectively, residing, respectively, at '7 Woodland Grove, Chapeltown, Leeds, England, and 169 Spencer Place, Leeds, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Rotary Printing liiiachines (for which we h ave filed an application in Great Britain No. 1425, Feb. '7, 1921), of which the following is a specification.
In a rotary sheet printing machine, it is well known to provide front lays against which the leading edge of the sheet is laid, and. which are moved away from the sheet immediately before it is seized by a gripper or grippers, which take the sheet forward to the printing position. In such a machine the front lays are usually actuated by a cam operated mechanism and the grippers by another cam operated mechanism or by the well known slide and pin mechanism.
In such a construction, if a sheet be improperly laid at the front lays, or is faulty in material or shape, it should be withdrawn from the front lays before the action of the grippers takes place, an operation which is difficult because of the short interval of time in which it can be effected. In case of failure to withdraw the sheet, it passes into the machine improperly, and frequently passes out of the gripper into the inking rollers or the printing couples and is destroyed, so necessitating a stoppage of the machine for cleaning up.
It is also well-known to provide a tripping mechanism, which is operated at will by means of a foot pedal or handle, whereby the members of the printing couple or couples are prevented from making printing contact.
According to the invention the cam operated or other mechanisms actuating the front lays and grippers are connected to the trippingmechanism of the machine, in such manner that they are rendered inoperable on the tripping mechanism being actuated, and thus the moving away of the front lays and the closing of the grippers are suspended at the will of the operator.
By this means the necessity for withdrawing the sheet immediately, in the case of an improperly laid or faulty sheet, is obviated, and the sheet can be withdrawn at leisure. Thus also the first sheet of a series may be laid to the front lays at any time and at leisure, and be passed into the machine at a time convenient to the operator.
The invention is diagrammatically illus trated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the manner in which mechanism according to the invention is applied, while Figure 2 is a detail side elevation.

The claw f is at one end engaged withor disengaged from the pin 20 according as the handle a is in the position indicated in full lines or in that indicated in dotted lines respectively. The claw f is supported at the other end by a lever k carried on a fulcrum pin Z and has also mounted upon it a runner m which engages within a closed cam groove n of a cam disc which rotates once in every cycle of the machine.
The parts described complete their cycle of operation as follows: The gripper Z; moves forward after taking the sheet in the direction of the arrow, and in. doing so delivers the sheet to the impression cylinder 2 in a known manner. A. sheet is then laid to the lays a as the grippers return to fthe position shown, and while the cams j '2' are held under constraint of the claw or fork f and the cam groove 12 is in the position in which the lever .shas its arm or extension 1) resting upon the stop :r, so that the runner it rests upon the low partof the cam and the lays 0 are in the position shown in the diagram Figure 2. The gripper Z: now returns into the position shown, but is constrained by the cam 1' to remain open.
The cams r and j, operated as described, now move in the opposite direction to the arrow, and the grippers 7'; close upon the sheet, under constraint of a spring (not shown). Immediately the gripper is closed the continuation of the motion of the cam operates the lays a so that the latter move away from the front edge of the sheet. The grippers 7a and the sheet again more forward.
If the tripping handle a is moved to the position indicated in dotted lines, the claw or fork f disengages and the extension remains upon the stop 00 so that the lays c are not operated, and the gripper 7.2 does not close upon the sheet before moving forward in the direction of the arrow.
We claim:
1. In rotary sheet printing machines provided with. mechanism for tripping the impression, a member for operating the said mechanism at any time, and means connected to and operated by the said member for preventing the front lays from being raised to allow a sheet to be taken by the sheet receiving grippers into the machine, substantially as described.
2. In rotary sheet printing machines pro vided with. mechanism for tnpping the impression, a member for operating the said mechanism at any time, and means connected to and operated by the said member for preventing the sheet receiving grippers from. being operated to close upon the sheet and to take it into the machine, substantially as described.
In rotary sheet printing machines pro vided with mechanism for trippihg the impression, a member for operating the said mechanism at any time, means connected to and operated by the said member for preventing the front lays from being raised to allow a sheet to be taken by the sheet receiving grippers into the machine, and means connected to and operated by the said member for preventing the sheet receiving grippers from being operated to close upon the sheet and to take it into the machine, substantially as described.
4;. In rotary sheet printing machines provided with mechanism for tripping the impression, a member for operating the said mechanism at any time, front lays co-operatin g with a sheet receiving cylinder and actuated by a ram, means for oscillating the said cam capable of disengagement therefrom, a stop to determine the travel of the cam in one direction, spring action applied upon the cam to press it in the direction of the stop, and means connected with the member for operating the tripping mechanism by which the means operating the cam may be disengaged, substantially as described.
5. In rotary sheet printing machines provided with mechanism for tripping the impression, a member for operating the said mechanism at any time, a sheet receiving cylinder, sheet receiving grippers carried by the said cylinder, an oscillatable cam for operating the said grippers, a stop for limiting the movement of the cam in one direction, spring action applied upon the cam to press it in the direction of the stop, means capable of disengagement from the cam for eifecting its oscillation, and means connected with the member for operating the tripping mechanism by which the means operating the cam may be disengaged, substantially as described.
6. In rotary sheet printing machines pro vided with mechanism for tripping the impression, a member for operating the said mechanism at any time through a rocking shaft, a sheet receiving cylinder carrying sheet receiving grippers, front lays adapted to co-operate with the said cylinder, a cam co-aXial with the said sheet receiving cylinder for operating the cylinder grippers and the front lays, an arm upon said cam, a
stop mounted. in the path of the said arm,
a spring connected to the said. arm to draw it in the direction. of the stop, a stud provided upon the said cam, a claw member adaptedto engage said stud and reciprocated by a cam, an arm upon. the said. rock in-g shaft and a link connecting the said. arm with the claw member, substantially as de scribed.
