[Class 100(i)] Sheets are fed to printing and like machines from a feed board by means of grippers carried by an intermittently rotating cylinder, or rotating arms, which bring the grippers to a position of rest beyond the sheet which is registered against the front lays, and the gripper carrier moves backwards from its position of rest to take the registered sheet and is then accelerated to the speed of the associated constantly rotating impression cylinder 3 before transferring the sheet to the grippers 19 of the impression cylinder. The shaft 2 of the gripper carrier 1 is driven for the main part of its motion by a quadrant gear 6 engaged by a gear 5 on the shaft of the impression cylinder, but when the gears 5, 6 run out of engagement the shaft 2 is controlled by decelerating and accelerating mechanism comprising a pair of rollers 10, 10a, carried by an arm 9 on the shaft 4 of cylinder 5, and a control cam 14 secured to the shaft 2. A further means of controlling the rotation of the shaft 2 comprises cams 7, 8 on the shaft of the impression cylinder and a pair of bowls 11, 12, connected to the shaft 2, the roller -12 being secured rigidly and the roller 11 mounted in a spring- pressed arm 15 normally pressed by a spring 17 against a stop 16. The bowls 11, 12 and cams 7, 8 co-operate to reverse the carrier from the position shown in Fig. 9 to cause the open grippers to take the sheet from the front lays, and then from the position of the parts shown in Fig. 2, the roll 10 engages the surface 13 of cam 14 and accelerates the shaft 2 to cause the grippers to attain the speed of the cylinder grippers 19, and also to bring the quadrant 6 into gear with the cylinder. After transfer of the sheet to the grippers 19 the carrier 1 rotates at the speed of the cylinder until the roll 10a engages cam surface 13a to decelerate the carrier 1, the quadrant 6 running out of gear. The bowl 12 then approaches the decelerator cam 8, and finally both bowls 11, 12 engage their respective cams 7, 8, and the gripper comes to rest as shown in Fig. 9 in advance of the front lays. To enable the feed gripper to move past the registered sheet without interference, the feed table may be lowered by cam mechanism as the gripper passes the lays, or the gripper bar 23 may be moved inwards by cam-and-lever mechanism 20, 21, 22, Fig. 9.
