624,849. Slicing machines. ABBOTT, H. G. Oct. 3, 1945, No. 25759. [Class 5(i)] [Also in Group VI] A machine for slicing vegetables comprises a cast base with means for clamping it to a table, and a standard carrying a circular flanged guard plate 11 and a bearing 13 for a spindle 14 having a handle 15 at one end and a disc 16 at the other end, lying within the flange of the guard plate and carrying one or more angularly-disposed cutter blades 18 on its inner surface 17. The edges of the blades. co-operate with slots 21 in the disc, one edge of each of which is bent to provide a seating for a blade and through which the sliced material passes, the lower part of the flange on the guard. plate being omitted to permit the passage of the slices. The material is fed through one or more integral or detachable sockets 25 on the outer surface of the guard plate, the lower end of the socket terminating- opposite the outer ends of the blades 18, which are so inclined to the surface 17 of the disc (Fig. 5, not shown), that the action of cutting a slice drags the material down- . wards so as to be a position to receive a further cut from the next blade. The blades may be secured to the disc by screws 19 or by upstanding pips cast on the disc which pass through apertures in the blades and are then riveted over (Fig. 6, not shown). To enable the thickness of the slices to be varied, washers may be placed between the blades and disc. Alternatively the disc and guard plate may be positioned in a horizontal plane, or adjustable means may be provided to bring them to this or an intermediate position. Furthermore, a lever may be employed to give the disc a semi-rotary action in two directions, one blade being provided cutting in one direction or at least two blades, one cutting in each direction.
