CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1915.
Application filed January 17, 1914. Serial No. 812,737.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, CHAnLEs A. ScHMrr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anaconda, in the county of Deerlodge and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cutters for cutting vegetables, such as cabbage, beets, turnips or the like into slices or slivers or stringy-like particles or portions.
An object of the invention is the provision of a vegetable cutter of this character which may be used primarily for domestic purposes and which may be operated to cut vegetables thoroughly and without waste.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a vegetable cutter which will consist of cooperating cutting elements and means for feeding the material to be cut vertically in the direction of said elements and then rotating the material to present the same to the effective cutting action of said elements.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the cutter; Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the vertical shredding blades and the supporting plates; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section illustrating the assem blage of the cutting blade.
The cutter comprises a platform 1 having horizontal diametrically opposite extensions 2 from which posts or parallel vertical standards 8 rise. These posts are connected with each other at their upper ends by a fixed bearing bar 4 having a center vertical opening 5, in which the spindle 6 is mounted to freely rotate. The spindle is also free to slide in said bearing opening 5 and to also slide and rotate in an opening 7 in a vertically movable pressure bar 8. This bar is primarily intended to be used in causing pressure to be applied to the material to be cut and to advance the material in a vertical direction toward the cooperating cutting device while secondly said bar is designed to form means to center the spindle 6 and to hold the material to be out against accidental derangement from the cooperating cutting elements durlng the cutting operation. The said bar 8 is provided at its ends with enlargements 9-9 having recesses whose walls partly embrace the vertical standards or posts 33.
The table or base 1 herein employed is of circular form, and formed in the table is a radial slot 11. Secured to the table by means of screws or the like is a plate 13 having one of its edges projecting slightly over the slot 11 and provided with a plurality of parallel shredding blades 14 that are spaced from each other, as shown. These blades 14 are provided with notches 15, and an inclined portion 15, said portion inclining in a direction toward the slot 11, and as shown a slicing blade 16 is secured to an angular portion 17 of the base 1 and its efiective cutting edge is extended over the slot 11 and reposing on the downwardly inclined portion 15 of the blades 14. Directly at the center of the base 1 is a centering pin 18, which rises to a point slightly above the upper ends of the blades 14. This pin is located directly in line with the coacting edges of the blades 14 and 16 for a purpose to be hereinafter fully explained.
Depending from the base 1 is a screw threaded bolt 20 and adjustably mounted on the bolt is a clamp 21 provided with a series of spurs 22. An adjusting nut 23 is mounted on said bolt and is adapted to be adjusted against the clamp so as to force the same against the under surface of the table or like support not shown and on which the apparatus as a whole may be mounted and properly supported during operation. The spindle 6 is provided at its upper end with a controlling handle 24, while at the lower end the spindle is provided with a fixed gripping head 25. This head has a plu rality of plates 26 secured thereto.
In using the device a potato or other vegetable to be operated upon is placed onto the base 1 and the pin 18 at the center of the base is associated therewith so as to hold the same in proper relation to the coacting cutting plates. The spindle 6 is then moved in a downward direction, so as to cause the gripping plates on the bottom of the head 25 to penetrate the potato and cause the same to be rotated over the base 1 as the spindle is revolved. In order that the potato may be advanced in a direction of the cooperating blades 14 and 16, pressure of the hand may be applied to the bar 8, so as to cause the same to beardirectly against the head 25. This arrangement is found desirable in that the pressure Will be distributed in a direction necessary to an operative retention of the object to be cut, relative to the blades 14 and 16. When revolving the spindle 6, the object to be shredded Will be advanced over the cutting edges of the blades 14 and 16 and, as a consequence thereof the object Will be cut in relatively long stringy strips, as Will be understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention Will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation. Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five, cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0'."
principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
I claim A vegetable cutter comprising a base having a slot, a horizontal knife carried by the base, a series of spaced Vertical knives secured to the base at a point forwardly of the horizontal knife, said vertical knives projecting above the horizontal knife and having inclined shoulders upon Which rests the cutting edge of the horizontal knife.
In testimony whereof I aifiX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
