UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
FRIEDRICH soHTTE, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEG-ETABLE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,711, dated January 3, 1860,` l p p To all 'whom t may concern: y
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH SCHTTE,
of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Cutting Vegetables, &c.; and "I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had `to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of a box or hopper having an inclined plane, and bein arranged and rendered adjustable ona rame in respect to a revolving cutting wheel in the manner described hereafter so that the slices cut from the vegetable &c. by the said wheel may be varied in thickness at pleasure.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention I will now proceed to `describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, Figure l, is a sectional elevation of my improved apparatus for cutting vegetables &c. and Fig. 2, `a ground plan.
A, is the frame of the machine supporting suitable boxes a and a in which turns the shaft B. To the latter is secured `a pulley D, the rim of which is cut away at four points situated at equal distances from each other. Near each opening of the rim and to the inside of the latter is secured a knife e by meansof a screw F which passes through the rim, through an oblong slot in the knife, and screws into the washer lapso that by turning the screw the knife may be loosened from its position and withdrawn in order to be sharpened, readjusted to its proper position and there secured, at pleasure.
On the top of theframe A and in front of the cutting pulley D is situated a box C,
open in front in order to allow the pulley liberty to revolve freely within it, and also open at the top for the admission of vegetables and other articles to operatedupon by the knives.
i The box C, fits in guides ai and d', secured to the top ofthe frame A, and in a proj`ec` tion i, secured to the under side `of the box,
lits a screw j, the end of which is so secured to a cross bar m of the frame thatit can turn freely therein, buthavenolongitudinal or `vertical movement...` L U i i i i To the inside of the boxxs secured `an in-` l` clined plane n, the upper endof which rests against the end of theibox, the `lower lend@ terminating at or near theflevel of theitop of the frame A. ,Q3
The vegetables or` other articles bein placed within `the box, a rotarymotioni y ,y imparted to the pulley `l),byyturningftheI handle E, on the shaft B,or by a strappass ing around a suitable pulley` secured Itothe same shaft. As eachfknife ingsuccession` p y y passes through the box, a portionofthe subl-` I stance in the latter` will `lbe sliced `offthe ,2 slice passing throughthe openinginthe and finally falling into any suitablereoep tacle placed under the frame. 1 1 i if The inclined plane n `by itspeculiarposi:` `70 tion renders the apparatus selffeedingfthe knives having a tendency `to ldrag .the` poi-p1` i tions of the vegetables downto a given poin y before the slice is cut off, hencethe thiolniessfi )f of the slice dependsguponi the position` to 1175 1 which the box C is adjusted 3in1 respect to the cutting pulley. Byturning the screw U the box may be so Inovedthat the lower end 1f of its inclined plane n, `may3 be brought nearer to or 4removed farther fromthe track `,30 of the knives, at pleasure. IVVhenatheplane i. 1 "I is nearest tothe pulley the sliceswillbe thin- 1. y nest, the slices increasing in size asthe plane i is moved back frornthe pulley; as long `as f the box remains in one positionhoweventhe slices will be all of onethickness.` i j I, Without claiming `the separateuse of the" .y revolving cutting wheel, Iclaimyasmyin vention and desire` to secure by y Letter` Patent- The box or hopper `C,`having aninclined l` plane u and beingarrangedandgrenderedffi` adjustableon the frame A`,in respect to they cutting wheel C, as andfor the purpose@` herein set forth. i .I y 95 1 In testimony whereof, Ihavefsigned `my ,1 name to this specicatiori:inpthefpresence` of two subscribing.witnesses..` FRIEDRICKJSCHUTTE. f Witnesses: I iff] HENRY HowsoN, 1 y CHARLES D.
