Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. STOVER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
PLANINGr-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,728, dated August 21, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. STOVER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Planing-Wfachines; and I hereby declare that the following specification, in connection with the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, constitute a lucid, clear, and exact description .'of the construction and use of the same.
In referring to the said drawings, Figure l, denotes a front end elevation. Fig. 2, a side elevation. Fig. 3, an elevation of cutting cylinder detached. Fig. 4, a central vert-ical section on line A, B, of Fig. 1.
Invention-The nature of my invention consists of an adjustable elastic or flexible wiper placed back of the cutting cylinder, to effectually wipe all the chips, shavings, and other matter from the nished surface, just after leaving the cutters, to allow a rigid pressure roll to firmly hold down the finished part of the board, without marring or scratching it, and allow it to easily move along at the saine time. Also in combining the wiper with the front yielding pressure roll, cut-ting cylinder, and back rigid pressure roll, with each other so that the board will be held firmly and solidly to the platen, both front and back of the cutter, while freely passing along, and at the same time not mar the finished surface of the board, or piece being shaped or planed. Also in constructing and so attaching a scale, rule, or measure to the frame, or cross head carrying the cutting cylinder, that the simple movement of the cutting cylinder up or down, the thickness of board to be finished will always be indicated.
00nstructz'0n.-To enable persons skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and carry out the same I will proceed to describe it as follows.
I construct the bed piece of wood seen at A, and t-he platen of the same material seen at B, which is grooved to fit and slide upon the tracks or ways attached to the bed piece A, on either side of which, I secure an upright, and at their top they are united together by cross bar D. The front edges of these uprights are beveled as seen in the drawings. I then construct a cross head seen at E, to which the cutting cylinder, seen at F, is suspended adjustably so as to freely revolve in t-he adjustable ournal boxes S, so attached to cross head as to be adjustable up to cause the knives or blades G, and H,
although fiat, to impart a shearing or draw- Aing stroke, or cut to the material being planed, as follows: the central portion of the cylinder is first made round and straight, then it is slabbed or surfaced off at an angle with its aXis to receive the cutting blades G, and H, as seen in the drawings, thus one end of the blades begin to cut before the other, and the cutting is continued across and along the board as the cutting cylinder revolves, imparting a drawing stroke which finishes the material or board in a smooth and superior and beautiful manner, the edges of the blades being slightly rounding to plane the piece level. The cylinders may be otherwise constructed if desired.
A yielding pressure roll I, is constructed and suspended to revolve in cross head E, in front of cutting cylinder F, the pressure being imparted to it by the elastic material N, over and on top of each of its bearings at the ends. This roll yields to the inequalities of the rough material, and at the same time holds it firmly down while freely passing under it to be planed.
I construct the rigid part of wiper as seen at K, and the elastic part seen at L, fitted to, and retained in channel formed in lower edge of K, which is firmly secured by screws c, to cross head E, and has all its movements, and it may be adjustable on the cross head. The elastic wiper L, cleans the finished surface of board or material after it leaves the cutter, and before it reaches the rigid pressure roll J, which revolves in stands M, secured adjustably but firmly to rigid piece of wiper seen at K, by screws n. The part K, is made adjustable up or down on the cross head by slotting or elongating the holes for the screws 0, which hold it to cross head E. The rigid pressure roll J, is made vertically adjustable by elongating the holes in stands M through which the screws n, pass to hold them.
I construct a scale or rule seen at P, on, or attached to the cross head E, the top end of which projects up through the cross bar D, and as the cross head E, and the cutting cylinder F, are raised or lowered, or moved.
This scale or rule will correctly indicate the required thickness to be given the board or material being planed.
The scale or rule'` surface of material being planed, after leaving the cutting blades and before reaching the back rigid pressure roll J, for holding down the board, and not mar its surface, essentially in the manner and for the purposes fully set forth.
2. The combination of Wiper K and L, the front yielding pressure roll I, the cutting cylinder F, and the back, adjustable but rigid pressure roll J, for firmly holding down the board front and back of cutter, and beautifully finishing the surface essentially in the manner and for the purposes fully set forth.
H. D. STOVER.
