Description

W. SMITH. Vegetable Cutter.
Patented June 8, 1858.
' llllllllt's UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. SMITH, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PROVISION-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,517, dated June 8, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM SMITH, of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Machine, which I denominate aProvisiorrCutter, for Slicing Cabbages, Potatoes, Beets, Cucumbers, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and made to form part of this specification, and similar letters are made to refer to corresponding parts of the improvement.
The nature of my improvement consists in the combined arrangement of means with which the provision is presented to the cutters and the means employed of setting and adjusting the cutters.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use the improvement I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1, is a longitudinal sectional View of the provision cutter attached to the edge of an ordinary table. Fig. 2, is a transverse section of the machine showing the back of the circular plate that carries the cutters, and Fig. 3, is a face View of the plate and cutters.
The machine is constructed capable of being attached to the edge of an ordinary tableas represented in Fig. 1, with the clamp (cZ,) and set screw (0,). (a) represents the stock of the machine (13,) the edge of the table to which it is attached and (f) is a circular plate furnished with cutters (h, h, h,) and mounted on and revolved with the shaft and crank (9,) in bearings as represented in Fig. 1. The cutters (h) are held and adjusted to the circular plate f with the screws J, J, K, and S, S. The screws J, are for drawing the cutters up to the plate and the screws (K,) for forcing them away, and by one set of screws, reaching against the other as represented in Fig. 1, the cutters can be set, any distance from the face of the plate f to cut the provision the required thickness.
(m, m,) is a semi-cylindrical piece closed at one end and made to slide on the plate (a) in the grooves (R, R,) for the purpose of feeding the provision to the cutters and in the present case (0) is supposed to represent the half of a cabbage head being fed to the cutters by taking hold of the handle (a) on the top of the cylinder piece (m) and drawing it toward the cutters while the wheel and cutters are revolved with the other hand for cutting. The semicylindrical piece is made large enough to slip over the plate f without striking it when being fed up as represented in Figs. 1 and 2.
What I claim as my improvement and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The arrangement of the semicylindrical piece (m,) and guide slides (R,) arranged with the stock (a) and circular plate (f) all as constructed for feeding the provision to the cutters as before mentioned.
2. I also claim the arrangement of the screws (J, J, K,) and (S, S,) with the cutters (h) and plate 7 for adjusting the cutters from and to the plate as represented for purposes before mentioned in the specification.
