VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,014, dated February 22, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. C. DAvoL, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Iniproved Device for Cutting or Slicing Vegetables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical section of my invention taken in the line Fig. 2. Fig. 2, a plan or top view of do, the follower being removed. Fig. 3, a detached transverse section of the plate lever and knife taken in the line y, y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention is chiefly designed for cutting or slicing vegetables for the table or domestic use, and consists in the employment or use of a vibrating plate lever provided with a double-edged adjustable knife and fitted to a bed plate which has a hopper attached, the hopper being provided with a follower and the whole arranged as hereinafter described to form a compact, eflicient and cheap implement for the intended purose. p To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a bed-plate which is supported at a suitable height by feet or legs a. This bed-plate may be of tri-lateral form of any convenient size. The bed plate A, has a circular opening b, in it and an annular fianch c, encompasses this opening at the under side of the bed plate as shown clearly in Fig. 1. j
To the under side of the bed-plate A, a plate lever B, is attached by a screw bolt CZ. The form of this plate lever is distinctly shown principally by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the front end of the plate being quite narrow as shown at` e, to serve as a handle, see more particularly Fig. EZ. On the upper surface of the plate lever B, and near its front end there is a hook f, which fits over on a curved portion g, at the front edge of the bed plate A, said curved portion g, being a portion of a circle of which the bolt CZ, is the center. This hook f, it will be seen supports the front part of the plate lever.
lin the plate lever B, there is a longitudinal slot h, the sides of which are inclined so that the bottom of the slot will be wider than its upper part as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
C, is a knife, each end of which has a vertical tang z', attached, said tangs being fitted in sockets j, which are attached to the plate lever and have setscrews 7c, passing horizontally into them to sustain the knife at a greater or less distance above the surface of the plate lever B. The knife C, is placed longitudinally over the slot and is double-edged, the edges being formed by basils l, at the under side of the knife as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
D, is a vertical cylindrical hopper which is placed on the bed plate A, and directly over the opening t. This hopper has a cylindrical follower E, placed within it as shown clearly in Fig. l.
rf he bed plate A, and plate lever B, are of cast metal, the hopper D, may be of sheet metal and the follower E, of wood.
The operation is as follows: The vegetables to be cut or sliced are placed in the hopper D, and the follower E, placed on them. The plate lever B, is then vibrated right and left, the operator grasping the handle e. The vegetables rest on the plate lever B, and the knife C, cuts or slices the vegetables while moving in either direction, the slices passing down through the slot h. If necessary the follower E may be pressed down by the hand of the operator, but in a majority of cases the gravity of the follower in connection with that of the vegetables,
will be sufficient to feed the latter to thel knife. In case of the vegetables however, binding or becoming wedged in the hopper, they may be loosened by pressing down the follower,
The knife C, is adjusted higher or lower I by regulating the'set screws 7c, in order to cut the slices thicker or thinner as may be desired. A piece of rubber a, or other suitable elastic substance may be placed at each side of hook F, to prevent violent concussion at the termination of each stroke of the plate lever B, said rubber striking against shoulders bx, at the front side of the bedplate.
I do not claim separately any of the parts herein shown and described, but having thus described my invention,
What I do claim as new and desire to searranged and combined to operate as and eure by Letters Patent, is- Ifor the purpose set forth. The bed plate A havin@ the hopper D v attached, provided vvith theD follower E, the WILLIAM C' DAVOL 5 vibrating plate lever B, provided with the Witnesses:
double-edged knife C, and hook F, and at- JAMES FORD, cached to the bedplate A, the Whole being JAMES DIXON.
