IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,035, dated August 15, 1871; antedated August 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GrnnoN B. MAssEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vegetable Critter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for slicing and cutting vegetables, apples, Snc.; and consists in an adjustable rotating disk-wheel, carrying adjustable knives or cutters, and in an inclined hopper, in connection with the wheel, the whole constructed and arranged to operate as hereinafter more fully described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side view of the machine; Fig. 2 an edge view, and Fig. 3 a top view ofthe disk-wheel detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This machine is ordinarily attached to the projecting edge of a table or other fixture by means of a set-screw, as seen, but the frame A may be constructed so as to be fastened otherwise, if desired. B is the disk-wheel, which is rigidly attached to the shaft C. The shaft revolves on a point or step through the bracket or arm I) of the frame. The point is made adjustable by means of the screw E, by which the shaft is raised and lowered for the purpose of adjusting the knives to the cutter-plate or bit on the bottom of the hopper. The knives are. adjustable in slots through the wheel by means of screws (one or more) in each blade, the screw or screws passing through a slot or slots in the blade. The knives may be of any form or description. v F is a straight-edged cutter, which takes a smooth slice from the potato, apple, or vegetable. G has a corrugated or serrated edge. H represents vertical cutters which pass through holes in the wheel and cut slits in the vegetable, so that the knife which follows in the rotation of the wheel will slice ol'f and leave the vegetable in narrow strips, when such a form is desired. The knives or cutters are readily removed, so thatmore or less may be used. I is the hopper, which is simply a cylinder supported above the wheel at an angle of forty-five degrees, more or less, as seen in Fig. 2. Thelower end is beveled to correspond, or nearly 'correspond, with the face of the wheel. A portion of the under beveled edge of the hopper is made by properly adjusting the wheel to just clear the knives and form the' cutter-plate or bit. The thickness of the slice cut is regulated by adjusting the knives on the, wheel. The upper'end of the shaft C is supported by the arm J, and the wheel is rotated by means ofthe crank K. The arm D and hopper are both supported by the plate L, as seen in the drawing. rlhe vertical cutters H are attached to a plate, M, which is fastened to the under side of the wheel by one or more screws, as seen in Fig. 2.
The apples, potatoes, or other vegetables are fed into the hopper with one hand while the wheel is revolved with the other, almost any form or thickness of slice being produced in the most perfect and rapid manner.
The machines may be constructed on a larger scale and be driven by steam or other motive power for cutting vegetables, as turnips, carrots, Ste., for feeding stock; but my principal object is to furnish a light and portable machine for slicing vegetables designed for the table. In the great saving'of time and in the accuracy with which its varied vopera-tions are performed this' vegetable cutter is believed to be unrivaled, and its advantages must be obvious to all.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- One or more horizontal slicers, F Gr, and vertical slitters H, arranged on and projecting through the revolving disk B, combined, as described, with the hopper I, placed obliquely to the plane of said disk, as and for the purpose specified.
GIDEON B. MASSEY.
