Abstract

624,673. Cable terminals. THOMAS, O. H. Feb. 20, 1947, No. 4973. [Class 38 (i)] In a battery connector comprising a split socket, the clamping pressure is supplied by co-operating cam surfaces. Fig. 1 shows one embodiment wherein the jaws 38, 39 of the socket are secured together at one end by a stud 41 having left- and right-hand threads at its ends on which are threaded latches 46, 47. The outer faces of the jaws adjacent the outer ends thereof and adjacent the ends of the stud have cam surfaces 44, 45 and 42, 43, respec. tively, with which co-operate cam surfaces 52, 53 and 50, 51 on the latches. The jaw 38 carries a cable socket 40. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the latches are connected by a yoke so that they can be turned together. In a further modification (Fig. 5, not shown), cam surfaces are provided only on the outer faces of the jaws adjacent the ends of the stud and on the co-operating faces of the latches. For use with battery lugs of a standard size, the stud may be plain (Fig. 6, not shown), the latches being freely rotatable thereon. Also in this modification the stud passes through the outer ends of the jaws, the inner ends being solid and carrying a cable socket. In Fig. 9, the hubs of the latches 69, 72 have journals 67, 70, respectively, the latter one being tapped to receive a screwed stud 65 passing through the journals to hold the latches and clamping jaws 61, 62 together. Co-operating cam surfaces 63, 64 and 74, 75 are provided only on the outer ends of the jaws and latches respectively. In order to prevent corrosion, bushings 73, Fig. 9, of phenolite or other non-corrosive alloy, may be provided, and the studs and latches may be formed of stainless steel or the like.
