On moving the bed 12 by means of the handle 88 to its extreme right-hand position, a spring .46 secured to a rod 17 on the carriage 12 pulls the lever clockwise, the pawl idly slicking past one or more pins 42. On moving the carriage to the left, the roller 44 engages the side plate 2 and the lever is moved anticlockwise, tensioning the spring, the pawl acting on a pin 42 to rotate the disc.
