Cylinder machines; inking-apparatus; tripping- arrangements; printing-surfaces.-Consists of a construction of travelling-cylinder machine for printing from a photo-mechanical printing-surface. The impression cylinder 8 is journaled in side frames 5 carrying guide-rollers 4, running in channel irons 2 secured to a wood or other base 1, and toothed wheels 6 gearing with racks 3 on the irons 2. The frames are connected by stays 14 and 15, the latter carrying a handle 16 ior operating the carriage formed by the frames 5. The bearings 9 of the cylinder 8 are pressed downwards by springs 10 adjustable by screws 12 and plates 11. A metal, glass, wood, cardboard, or other support 17 carrying a gelantine printing-surface is secured on the bed 1 by side wedges 18 and pivoted corner springs 19. A frame 20 pivoted on a pin 21 is brought down so as to surround the plate, and the sheet to be printed is laid over the frame and covered by a blanket 23. To prevent displacement of the blanket, the cylinder 8 is raised momentarily as it passes over the front end of the blanket by the engagement of rollers 25 on the shaft 7 of the cylinder with inclined tracks 24 secured to the irons 2. A stop pin 30 on one frame 5 cooperating with detachable brackets 27, 28 limits the movements of the frames 5. When the machine is not in use, the bracket 28 is removed and the frames 5 pushed along till the pin 30 engages a bracket 29 after which the bracket 28 is replaced to lock the frames against movement. In this position also, an inclined track 26 in the centre of the bed 1 allows the springs 10 to expand fully. In this machine, the printing surface is inked by the operator by any usual method. In a modification, an inking-roller is carried by side frames carrying guide and gear wheels similar to the wheels 4, 6 of the frames 5 and is reciprocated over the bed by the operator The sheets may be fed to the machine from a feed board 31, Fig. 5, and pass between the impression cylinder 8 and a smooth or fluted cylinder 35 driven frictionally by the cylinder 8. The sheets are guided round the cylinder 8 by a metal guide 36. The cylinder 35 is carried by pivoted arms 34 so that it may be turned up out of the way when the feed board 31 is not in use, a stop 37 engaging a notch 38 in the frame 5.
