Platen machines; inking-apparatus.-A handoperated platen machine comprises a bed 4 which supports a printing-surface in such a manner that it can be lifted from the bed in the position shown in Fig. 1. The bed 4 runs on a carriage 3, and it is moved to and from a platen 8 which is adapted to be depressed to effect the printing by means of a hand-operated eccentric-shaft 21 and rod 30. The sheet to be printed is fed between a gripper 16 and an adjustable tympan formed of two parts 12, 13, which are secured by a hook 14 with the required number of packing sheets of paper &c. between them. The tympan and gripper open automatically under the action of springs 11, 17, and close when the bed 4 is moved under the platen 8. At the side of the bed 4 type-high racks 6 are arranged which engage projections 9 on the bottom of the platen to take the direct pressure of the same, the pressure to the sheet being transmitted through the tympan 12, 13, the packing of which is adjusted to give the proper pressure. The racks 6 also rotate inking-rollers 34 which receive their ink from a distributing-roller 35 which may be inked by hand, this roller being rotated and reciprocated longitudinally by a screw. The rollers are mounted upon arms 33 secured by screws 42 to abutments 36 on the head 19 in which the eccentric-shaft 21 is mounted. The arms 33 may be raised to hold the rollers 34 out of action, and levers 40 retain the rollers in their bearings. The platen 8 is guided by a central boss 22 which moves in a central opening in a plate 29 adjustably secured to bolts 18 carried by the base 1. The platen is also guided by central side guides and is normally kept raised by springs 27. Embossing; impression-surfaces. - The invention may be applied to embossing paper, for which purpose a counterpart of the embossing-die may be formed by impressing the die against paper sheets secured in the tympan, and coated with a paste made of whiting and glue. Coloured prints may be thus embossed.
