Abstract

622,700. Lawn - mowers. WORTHING- TON, E. H. Jan. 28. 1947, No. 2574. Convention date, July 23, 1940. [Class 6(ii)] A lawn-mower comprises front and rear ground engaging roller elements D and H, a framework connecting said elements and including side frame members F rigidly connected to each other and a bed knife E mounted between and carried by said side frame members, a rotary fly knife C having central shaft extensions C', a fly knife supporting frame adjustably mounted relative to the bed knife, the latter frame comprising two rigidly connected lateral elements A situated outside the side frame members F, and having the shaft extensions C<SP>3</SP> journalled therein, and a mechanism which normally maintains the fly knife in engagement with the bed knife. The engaging mechanism comprises a pair of regulators L which connect the frames A and F. Each regulator comprises a rod M with an eye M' surrounding a stud M<SP>2</SP> on the frame A. The rod M extends axially through a cylinder L' which has a part L' attached to the frame F, and disposed in the cylinder are clutch means which allow the fly knife to move only towards the bed knife, the clutch means being either a ring of balls or levers with holes through which the rod M extends. A release lever T is provided to render the clutch means inoperative so that the fly knife may be moved away from the bed knife for inspection purposes. In a modification, Fig. 5, (not shown), a hydraulic clutch mechanism may be provided, the liquid only flowing freely in one direction.
