Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of heat exchange apparatus, a plurality of steel members and brazing alloy or solder are assembled and maintained in position and one or more of the elements chromium, silicon, titanium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese nickel and cobalt is diffused into the steel by treatment with a halide of the diffusing element, the temperature of the treatment being such that the brazing alloy or solder unites the members of the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger members may be of mild steel or austenitic steel and may be held together in a jig during the diffusion of chromium by treatment with chromous chloride at 900-1100 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen. The heat exchange members may be surrounded with porous non-destructive material which has been impregnated with a halide of the coating element.
