Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide steel pipes for use as boiler tubes having excellent resistance to steam oxidation by a method wherein a decarburized layer is formed on the surface layer of a steel material and is subjected to chromizing treatment at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:A low-alloy steel such as carbon steel having less than 12% of Cr content is decarburized to form on the surface a decarburized layer more than 10mu thick. It is preferable to reduce carbon content in the decarburized layer to 0.01% or less. Then, chromizing treatment is applied at a low temperature of 800-900 deg.C to provide a chromized alloy layer having enough thickness against steam oxidation. The process provides a steel material having excellent high-temperature strength and weldability as well as resistance against steam oxidation.
