Abstract
620,522. Moulding artificial eyes. SHAKESPEARE, W. H. Nov. 19, 1946, No. 34286. [Class 87 (ii)] A mould for making artificial eyes from synthetic resins particularly of the acrylic type comprises an upper plate 1 and a lower plate 2 each having several holes which receive plugs 7, 10 having shaped surfaces 7b, 10b to form the convex and concave surfaces of the sclerotic. The plugs are held in the holes by retaining plates 8, 11, flanges 7a, 10a, and key pins which engage in corresponding keyways in the plugs and holes. A hole 7d is provided in the plug 7 for receiving a stopper 12 having a part 12a shaped to form a cavity for the iris and pupil. A different upper plug having a cavity of the required shape is used for moulding the iris and pupil. In order to ensure that the moulded sclerotic is replaced in the correct position on the lower plug for the moulding of the iris, the mould plate 2 is formed with grooves 14 to form positioning projections on the sclerotic. The mould parts may be pressed and clamped together and heated during the moulding. The plugs 10 may be made of nickel-chrome alloy and the plugs 7 may be made of mild steel coated with chromium or nickel.
