Abstract

Diazo dyes are manufactured by the action of phosgene on aminoazo dyestuffs of the general formula <FORM:0620257/IV (c)/1> wherein Z represents hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy, and Y hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy or acylamines. The products yield on cotton or regenerated cellulose yellow to orange dyeings which are readily dischargeable and which may be after-treated with copper-yielding substances, particularly those of neutral reaction, or with water-soluble high molecular polyamino or polymino compounds which have the property of improving the wet fastness of substantive dyestuffs, especially good results being obtained by a combination of both treatments. Examples describe the treatment with phosgene, in a neutral or weakly alkaline solution or in a solution made acid with acetic acid, of the dyestuffs 4-amino-6-sulphosalicylic acid --> o- or m-toluidine, o-anisidine, 2 : 5-dimethylaniline, 2-methoxy-5-methylaniline, 3-acetylaminoaniline or 3-acetylamino-6-methoxyaniline. The dyestuffs from m-anisidine and from 2 : 5-dimethoxyaniline are also specified as starting materials.
