620,044. Cooling and conditioning paper. CRABTREE, K. April 23, 1946, No. 12259. [Class 96] A web 5 of dry paper is moistened, and thus conditioned or " seasoned," by passing it over a hollow " seasoning " drum 7 chilled to or below the dew-point of the surrounding air, and then around a reel of paper riding on the drum and supported on a winding shaft 8. The drum may be over three feet in diameter. It is cooled by spraying the inner surface of the part in contact with the paper with a liquid refrigerant, e.g. water or brine at 38-42‹ F., supplied continuously through a pipe 22 and withdrawn through a hollow trunnion.
