Abstract
619,362. Wood cutting ; cutter blocks. JENKINS, J. Dec. 4, 1946, No. 35936. [Class 145 (i)] A circular cutter block 1 has at least one recess 3 formed in the rim of the block to receive a cutter 5, which can be inserted therein with its cutting-edge 16 protruding from the rim of the block, and includes a wedge 7 which can be inserted between the cutter and one wall of the recess with the narrower end of the wedge towards the open end of the recess so as to hold the cutter in position against the opposite wall of the recess and includes also a pressure screw 8, mounted in an aperture 4 bored from an opposite point on the rim of the block through to the inner end of the recess, said screw and wedge being anchored in such manner that the wedge can move forward slightly towards the open end of the recess, independently of the screw, under the action of centrifugal force set up when the block is in operation. As shown, two cutters are used, each in a recess tapered towards its open end, the axis of each aperture containing a pressure screw being offset slightly from the axis of the corresponding recess. The pressure screw is anchored to its wedge by a nose portion 9, inserted in an aperture in the wedge and retained therein by pins 11 which pass transversely through the wedge and engaging in an annular groove 10 in the nose of the screw, the pins being smaller in diameter than the width of the groove.
