Abstract
In the manufacture of artificial filaments of, for example, viscose or casein, wherein a tow of the freshly formed filaments is treated in a bath of liquid having a specific gravity less than that of the tow, entanglement of the tow <PICT:0618925/IV(a)/1> is avoided by feeding it in convolutions into the bath, supporting it therein on a platform below which is a free liquid space, allowing it to accumulate on the platform for a sufficient time to produce the desired effect and continuously withdrawing it from below through an opening in the platform at a rate substantially equal to the rate of feed. The platform may have a centrally disposed slot through which the tow is withdrawn or the platform may comprise a grid of rods, the tow being withdrawn through one of the central gaps between the rods. Means may be provided to control automatically the speed of withdrawal of the tow in accordance with the weight of tow supported on the platform. As shown, the tow 1 is fed, in convolutions, to the liquid 2, the tow being supported during treatment on a grid 8 and being withdrawn continuously by leading it through the grid and passing it under rods 11, 12 and over roll 13 and motor-driven godet 14. The grid is suspended from pivoted levers 171, 1711, the lever 171 actuating a rheostat 21 which controls the speed of godet 14 in accordance with the weight of tow upon the grid. To give the supported tow a greater buoyancy, a slow upward movement of the treating liquid is effected by a circulating pump 23. Specifications 431,418, 451,944, 494,184 and 565,011 are referred to.ALSO:In the manufacture of artificial filaments of, for example, viscose or casein, wherein a tow of the freshly formed filaments is treated in a bath of liquid having a specific gravity less than that of the tow, entanglement of the tow is avoided by feeding it in convolutions into the bath, supporting it therein on a platform below which is a free liquid space, allowing it to accumulate on the platform for a sufficient time to produce the desired effect and continuously <PICT:0618925/IV (c)/1> withdrawing it from below through an opening in the platform at a rate substantially equal to the rate of feed.
