Abstract

<PICT:0618512/III/1> The apparatus described in the abridgment for Group XVI for applying ink, or other colour, to a web or sheet of paper, cloth or other material in the form of a design in one or more colours can be used for applying a single or multiple coating to a sheet or web. To this end the cylinder A is fitted with a plane surface of a material such as iron which is permeable to electric or magnetic lines of force, and ink or paint is transferred to the plane surface from an inclined inked &c. plate 35 under the action of a high potential electric circuit connected to the plate 35 and to an electrode 47 mounted insulatedly with the cylinder A. The transfer of ink &c. may be assisted by or caused only by the energization of electromagnetic coils 42 fitted with filed bars 44. The ink &c. may contain iron powder. The ink &c. received by the cylinder A is transferred to a sheet or web 76 fed between cylinder A and a cylinder B by electrodes 160, 471 connected to high potential terminals, or by electromagnetic action, or by both electromagnetic and electric action.
