Abstract

615,545. Ball bearings. SCOPHONY, Ltd., and ADAMS, A. E. Jan. 18, 1946, No. 1846. [Class 12 (i)] A high-precision shock-proof ball bearing consists of or includes a ring of balls which co-operate with at least three race parts, the working surfaces of which are finished by a process as in optical polishing comprising rotation and gyration or translation in the presence of a polishing medium. Fig. 1 shows an outer race 10, the track 11 of which is of frustospherical cup-form through the bottom 12 of which extends an inner race member 13 prevented from passing therethrough by a snap ring 15 and having a track of convex frustospherical form 14 with the smaller end arranged towards the larger end of the outer race. The inner race member 13 is a push-fit on a flanged bush 20. After insertion of the balls 19 a thrust-disc inner race member 17 finished as for an optical flat is slid on the bush 20 to be pressed against the balls by a dished spring disc 22 retained by a snap ring 23. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the outer race comprises a member 23A push-fitted in an outer housing ring 33 and a member 23B with slide-fit and pressed towards the member 23A by a spring ring 30 held in place by a snap ring 31. The inner race consists of two members 25A, 25B similarly fitted on the bush 34. The tracks 24 of the outer race members and 26 of the inner race members are respectively of concave and convex frusto-spherical form finished as in optical polishing, the two outer-race members 23A, 23B having their larger openings facing each other while the two inner-race members 25A, 25B have their ends of smaller diameter facing each other. With the spring rings 30, 36 for the outer and inner races arranged at the same end of the bearing this can yield against shock in either direction; the bearing can also yield against radial shock. The cage 28 for the balls is located between the associated members of each race.
