Abstract

474,042. Ball - and - roller bearings ; hinges. WEIR, Ltd., G. & J., and PULLIN, C. G. April 22, 1936, No. 11469. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXV] A bearing or hinge, particularly one for members subjected to small oscillatory movements, comprises a pair of race rings 2, an intermediate ring 1, balls or rollers 3 between the rings 1, 2, and oppositely-acting one-way clutch members 4 associated with the ring 1 and each ring 2. In operation, upon oscillatory movement occurring between the two rings 2, the balls 3 of one row will track in the opposite direction to the balls. 3 in the other row. The race tracks on the ring 1 are preferably flat or slightly concave, and the races on the rings 2 are V-grooved and preferably dimensioned as shown in Fig. 7. The invention may be applied to axial and radial thrust bearings. As shown in Figs. 8 and 9, an axial thrust ball bearing is combined with radial roller bearings, and an intermediate ring 27 is common to all the bearings, free wheel rollers 25, 26, being associated with one of the roller bearings. In a modification, the intermediate race is associated only with the thrust bearing and one of the roller bearings is self-aligning.
