Abstract

615,500. Windscreen wipers. TRICOFOLBERTH, Ltd., BAYES, C. A., and BODDY, J. July 30, 1946, Nos. 22709/46 and 6193/47. [Class 138 (i)] Means for attaching a windscreen wiper blade to its actuating arm 3, Fig. 2, comprises a cover 11 having an aperture 16 through which the end of the arm can be inserted, means for detachably securing the arm to the cover, bearing means attached to the blade, and a spindle 18 carried by the bearing means and passing through apertures in the cover, at least one of which is elongated transversely of the blade, which can thereby both tilt about the spindle axis, and swing out of alignment with the arm on meeting an obstacle. The bearing means comprises a metal U-shaped clip 10 supporting the spindle, a pad 23 of rubber or the like preventing contact between the cover and clip. The arm is secured by a projection 15 pressed into a track 13 in a ramp 12 by a spring 17, whose ends rest on the spindle, one being forked and engaging a groove 19 therein. The non-elongated aperture 20 holds the spindle loosely, and the cover is broader at the inner end; a spring bears against the cover and spindle to keep the blade and arm normally in alignment. In another form, Fig. 6, the spindle has a part 25 which passes through the elongated aperture and has a threaded end 29 screwing, by means of a notch 30, into a spring 26 coiled round a separate part 24 of the spindle fixed to the cover, the spring 26 keeping the arm and blade normally in alignment. The spindle passes through one end of the spring 27, whose other end rests on an abutment 28. A piece of rubber or the like may be fitted round the part 24 between the spring 27 and the cover, so as to engage the edge of the clip on tilting of the blade. According to the second Provisional Specification, one end of the spring 27 has a recess engaging over the spindle, the other end having a projection which enters an elongated slot in the cover.
