Abstract

614,816. Vices. AIR DUCTS, Ltd., and STAPLES, H. J. A. Aug. 1, 1946, No. 22938. [Class 61 (ii)] Tn a power-operated vice, the movable jaw consists of, or is moved by, a wedge sliding on a base member. The base member 1 has an inclined face 2 on which a wedge 3 slides, held in position by an undercut groove and tongue. The wedge is moved by means of a fluidpressure cylinder and piston, or electrically, by means of a solenoid and plunger. The fixed jaw 7 of the vice is mounted above the wedge 3 on an upstanding arm 5 and may be provided with holes 11 to act as a drilling jig. In a modification, the arm 5 is made U-shaped and is attached to both sides of the body 1. In a further modification a plate forms the movable jaw and slides vertically on the arm 5, the wedge acting on its undersurface. A stop may be provided on the wedge to limit its release movement. Ratchet and pawl mechanism may be provided to lock the wedge 3 in gripping position, and an end-plate 10 also acting as a drilling jig may be secured to the arm 5.
