1299336 Surgical stapler VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT KHIRURGICHESKOI APPARATURY I INSTRUMENTOV 19 April 1971 [6 March 1970 12 March 1970] 24750/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division B4] A surgical stapler comprises a staple magazine 8, die carriers consisting of two members 2 and (3) (see Fig. 12, not shown), one of which 2, is movable in the direction of the legs of the staples, and each of which is adapted to hold a die (21) (see Fig. 6, not shown), with a depression aligned with the respective staple legs, means to move the die carrier in the direction of the legs, an ejector to drive the staple legs through bore fragments to cause the staple legs to bend around in the depression. The staple magazine 8 is slidably attached to a bearing stock 1 by means of locating projections 14 on the magazine under flanges 15 of the stock 1, and retained in position by a springed arm 10 and slider 11 attached to a hollow staple carrier 6. The staple carrier is threaded at one end and may be moved longitudinally by a threaded screw 17. A staple ejector 12 with a head 13 passes through the staple carrier, abuts the magazine 8, and may be actuated by a shaft 19 attached to a handle bar 20. The movable die carrier member 2 is reciprocable in guide ways in the stock and is operable by a thumb screw 5. Die members 22 and 23 fixed in position on members 2 and 3 by means of the engagement of a pin on a spring plate 2 with a projection 25 on the members 2 and 3. The depressions of the die members are arcuate in shape, Fig. 7 (not shown) and the mouths of the depressions (24) are wider at the outer ends where the staples are received, Fig. 3 (not shown), or are wider at both ends of the depression than in the centre, Figs. 6 and 9 (not shown). Dies may be used with inclined bores contacting surfaces Figs. 5a-e (not shown) depending on the shape of the bores to be stapled, and provision may be made in the die for applying a single staple to a bore Fig. 6 (not shown) or several staples simultaneously Fig. 9 (not shown) in which each die member has several depressions. Lugs 32 are provided in the die 21 to locate the bore to be stapled, which is then wedged in between the staple magazine 8 and the fixed member of the die by turning screw 17 to move the staple carrier 6, ejector and magazine towards the die. The movable member 2 is then moved into engagement with the bore and staples may then be applied by the ejectors.
