Abstract

1284289 Surgical stapling device UNITED STATES SURGICAL CORP 9 Oct 1969 [10 Oct 1968] 49698/69 Heading A5R [Also in Division B4] A surgical stapling device which may be attached to a clamping tool 12, e.g. a hemostat, comprises a staple housing 52, a threaded screw 46 located in the housing 52 and forming a staple carrier, the staples being located in a groove in the screw, a cylindrical cam 48 fixed to the screw 46 and guided in a bore 62 in a movable block 60 which provides a cam guide in which the cam can be caused to simultaneously advance and rotate by moving the block, a staple hammer 58 pivotally attached to the housing 52, means 70 to cause the hammer to rotate about a pivot 36, and a bracket 10 to support the device on the clamping tool 12, Figure 1 (not shown). The bracket is slidable on the tool to move the staple carrier and hammer towards or away from the clamping tool jaws. To place a staple, the bracket 10 is first moved forward and then block 60 is moved forward causing cam 48 to rotate once. Staples, located on the threads of screw 46, move forward and one is positioned at a slot (54) in housing 52. Further movement of block 60 causes a wedge 70 to rotate hammer 58 about pivot 36 and thus eject a staple. An anvil (78) is provided on bracket 10 to bend the staples. Block 60 is then withdrawn for the next operation.
