1401684 Inserting tags DENNISON MFG CO Ltd 30 May 1972 [27 May 1971] 25283/72 Heading D1G Apparatus for dispersing fasteners 54 having a head 54a Fig. 13, and a filament extending from the head, comprises a pair of clamping jaws 20, 21 Fig. 1 relatively movable to clamp material 23 therebetween a needle 25 having a longitudinal slot and movable relative to the jaws to penetrate material held by the jaws and a plunger 51 movable to force the head of a fastener along the slot of the needle. In a first embodiment a movable jaw 21 is actuated by a compressed air piston 31, and normally urged rearwardly by a spring 42. The inner jaw includes racks 22a, 22b which engage gears 44 coupled in turn to a larger diameter gear 45. The gears are rotatable within a telescoping member 26. The jaw 21 is urged forwardly by a spring 47 which is stronger than spring 42, forward movement being limited by a stop pin 49. In operation, fasteners 54 are threaded into a slot 61. Actuation of the piston 31 causes the telescoping member 26 and jaw 21 to move forward, spring 42 first compressing. The needle 25 penetrates the material layers via jaw cut-outs 20e, 21e Fig. 8 and the plunger 51 moves forward at a greater speed due to rotation of the gears and movement of the rack 50. The fastener 54 is separated from the carrier 57 and passes through the material The needle has the usual V-shaped cut-off groove. Retraction follows, and the return of the telescoping member causes an indexing wheel 70 to position the next fastener in front of the needle when a rod 80 engages a plug 82 and holds the indexer 75. A second embodiment is hand operated by handles 100, 103 Fig. 14, with the work held by jaws 102, 106 which have cut-outs 102a 106a for the needle 120. A plunger 125 has teeth 125a and cooperates with a wheel 116. An indexing wheel 130 and pusher 137 are provided and when the handles are released a rack 11 retracts (to the left in Fig. 14) returning the plunger 125 and engaging the pusher 137 to rotate the indexing wheel 130 to position the next fastener in front of the needle. A third embodiment is arranged for automatic control with the needle mechanism in a housing 173 which also controls the jaw 176, Fig. 26. A modification to the first embodiment includes a nose guard 152 Fig. 18 and a bracket having inner guide edges 157a to position two sides of a ticket 158 between the jaws. The ticket is held by a binder clip 159.
