A flexible printing plate is secured to the printing cylinder by hydraulically or pneumatically operated power means. In the described embodiment each end of the plate 2 is clamped in a longitudinal gap in the cylinder by a device comprising a bar 1, adjustably mounted in the gap and having formed therein a wedge-shaped slot, and a wedge-shaped bar 3 disposed in the slot. The bar 1 is guided movably in a manner known per se and may be tilted transversely to the gap to tension the plate 2 by means of screws (not shown). The bar 3 is moved relatively to the slot by pneumatically actuated piston and cylinder arrangements the piston 7 of each being double-acting such that both the clamping of the plate end between the bar 3 and the upper surface of the slot in the rail 1, and the release therefrom, are power actuated. Anti-friction needle bearings 5 are provided between the plate 2 and the lower surface of the slot, which is formed by a hardened steel insert 4. Each piston has a rod 8 with an extension 9 thereof passing through the bar 3 and carrying an end-stop portion 20. The piston, rod, extension and stop are mounted in a cylinder 6 under the influence of a weak spring 21 which allows the piston &c. to move freely both ways under the influence of the pneumatic power prior to contacting the bar 3. Each cylinder incorporates two pre-control valve devices 12, 18 which ensures that the full power of the compressed air is available before admitting it to the relevant side of the piston. A valve is provided in the pneumatic system to cut off the air supply to the cylinder 6 once the piston has been actuated.
