Abstract
614,590. Toothed gearing; reversing gearing. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. July 16, 1946, No. 21235. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1945. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] A device for bringing two gear-wheels into mesh is shown in the Figure as applied to spurgears 2 and 3, but is particularly applicable to engaging a driving bevel gear with one or the other of two side bevel gears on a driven shaft to effect a drive in one direction or the other and comprises a control device 5, a ratchet device 6 for intermittently rotating one of the gears a small amount, a presser device 7 for alternately pressing the gears 2, 3 into engagement and a locking device 8. As shown, the gear 2 is carried on a pivoted arm 4 and is in constant mesh with a driving gear 1. A piston 24 of a fluid pressure servomotor 7 is adapted to move the arm 4 to bring the gear 2 into or out of engagement with the gear 3 and a piston 41 of a servomotor 20 is adapted to actuate a pawl 43 to engage with a ratchet-wheel 44 secured to the gear 1 to effect the intermittent rotation of gear 2. For effecting an engagement of the gears 2 and 3 a valve 9 of control device 5 is actuated by a hand-wheel 12 to supply pressure fluid through a pipe 32 to below a piston 28 of locking device 8 to raise this piston and a locking pin 29 and to close an electric switch 31 of an electric motor 16. This motor reciprocates a valve 15 which supplies pressure fluid alternately to the ratchet servomotor 20 and the presser servomotor 7. Thus alternate ratchet and pressing operations are applied to the gear 2 until the teeth assume a position in which correct and full meshing is obtained. On full displacement of control valve' 9 pipe 32 is exhausted to 14 so that the pressure on piston 28 is relieved to allow a spring 36 to move piston 28 downwards for the locking pin 29 to engage a slot 30 on the rod of piston 24 to lock this piston and the arm 4 in the engaged position and also to stop the motor 16 of the ratchet device 6. Disengagement can be effected when desired by reverse operation of the valve 9. In another arrangement, as applied to a bevel reversing gear, the presser device 7 is formed as a double acting device to operate one way or the other according to movement of the control valve 9 and a double locking device is also provided. In a further arrangement for a reversing gear of a railway vehicle driven by, for example, a gas turbine, safety devices are provided to ensure that the engaging device cannot be put into operation should the vehicle still be moving, the brakes not be applied or power gas is being supplied to the turbine. The hydraulic power devices shown may be replaced by mechanical, electrical or pneumatic devices and may be used on other types of vehicles than railway vehicles and on stationary plants in conjunction with any type of prime mover such as steam engines and turbines or internal-combustion engines.
