Clutches, claw; controlling clutches.-A mechanical-stoker, or other analogous apparatus, is operated at predetermined intervals, which can be varied as desired. The constantly running wheel A, mounted loosely on the shaft B, is formed with teeth adapted to engage a pawl E radially slidable in an arm D secured to the shaft. A second armC actuates the pusher cross-head L. Normally the pawl is held retracted by a cam K acting through an angle lever J and roller F, but at intervals, depending on the speed of rotation of the cam, a depression in the cam surface allows the pawl to engage the wheel A for one or more strokes of the pusher. The relation of the parts is such that disengagement occurs when the driving strain on the pawl is a minimum, that is, just after the beginning of the return stroke of the pusher, and further, the arm of the lever J is curved so as to retain its hold of the pawl after the disengagement of the clutch.
