Abstract
614,341. Gas turbine fuel systems. RAWLINSON, G. H. C. July 10, 1946, No. 20673. [Class 110 (iii)] Fuel for a gas turbine is drawn from a tank 10 by an electrically driven centrifugal booster pump 11 and delivered to a main fuel pump 12 driven by the turbine. During starting, fuel is supplied to a torch igniter 24 direct from the booster pump which during the starting operation is run at an increased speed. The increased speed is secured by inserting a resistance 21 in the field circuit 16 of a shunt-wound motor 15 driving the booster pump 11. An automatic time switch 28 controls the starting motor and the operation of the torch igniter and closes at 26 the circuit of a relay 22. The armature 20 normally bridges contacts 18 in the field circuit 16 and, when the relay 22 is energized, the circuit is broken at 18 and remade by bridging contacts 19 which are in circuit with a resistance 21. After a time interval, the switch 28 terminates the starting operations. The torch igniter comprises a spark gap, across which a high voltage is applied, and an electromagnetically-operated valve controlling the flow of fuel across the spark gap.
