Abstract
596,134. Motor control systems. GIBSON, H. C. July 24, 1945, No. 18984. [Class 38(iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] An induction motor coupled to another dynamo-electric machine, which normally functions as a D.C. generator, is associated with switching system whereby the second machine may be utilised as a motor to start the A.C. machine, the switches having a normal position in which the second machine is connected as a motor and being automatically operated to connect it as a generator when a predetermined speed is reached. In the system shown, normally closed contacts, 11, 12, 13 of a contactor 10 connect the winding 1 of the A.C. machine and the armature 3 and series field 4 of the second machine in series across the A.C. supply 5, 6 for starting. At a predetermined speed the voltage generated in winding 1 causes a relay 8 to pick up, thereby energising contactor 10 which at contacts 11, 12 connects the armature and series field of the second machine to the D.C. lines 18, 19, energises its shunt field 7 over contacts 14, 15 and connects the A.C. winding 1 directly across the A.C. supply over contact 13. Relay 8 holds in over contact 16.
