Abstract
745,845. Control of several D.C. motors. METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 1, 1954 [July 24, 1953; Sept. 21. 1953], Nos. 20657/53 and 26023/53.. Class 38(3) Relates to a protective arrangement for a traction system in which a main motor MM has one or more auxiliary motors AM in parallel therewith and is connected to the supply through an individual contactor LS1, the speed of the main motor being governed by a master controller for progressively varying resistance in the motor circuit. When a reversing drum RD is moved to an operative position with a speed drum SD in its "off" position, a lowcurrent relay LCR is energized through its coil 8, and auxiliary relay AR closes contacts AR1. When the speed drum is moved to its first position, contactor coil LS becomes energized to close contacts LS1. Movement of the speed drum to a higher position causes the auxiliary relay to drop out but the contactor LS is held in by contacts LS2. The pick-up coil 8 is open-circuited in the higher positions of the drum SD, the relay LCR remaining closed, however, by virtue of motor current passing through coil 7. Upon failure of the supply voltage, relay LCR drops out to de-energize the main contactor, and. although the motor AM may act as a generator, no current passes through coil 7. to delay the opening of relay LCR. Re-establishment of the supply voltage may re-close the lowcurrent relay but the main contactor is' not closed until the drum SD is returned to its "off" or first position. In a modification, the auxiliary relay is given a delayed release characteristic and its operating coil is connected directly to the negative terminal of the low-tension supply.
