Abstract
613,645. Electron multipliers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., CUTTING, A. B., and WARREN, G. W. June 24, 1946, No. 18859. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron multiplier comprising a photoelectric primary cathode and two or more secondary cathodes in the form of hollow shells which form part of or are electrically connected to separate metal plates sealed through the envelope, the secondary cathodes are so arranged that the electron stream strikes alternate secondary cathodes on the inner surfaces and the other secondary cathodes on the outer surfaces of the hollow shells. As shown, secondary cathodes 11, 14 are concave inwards over their lower parts and secondary cathodes 12, 15 concave outwards over their upper parts. These electrodes and also accelerator grid 18 and anode 17 are supported by, and may be integral with, annular metal discs passing through the envelope. The primary cathode 8 is of glass coated with photo-emissive material and is surrounded by a first accelerator grid 10. In another embodiment the electrode 11 may comprise the primary cathode, in which case it is of glass and coated on its inner surface with photo-emissive material. According to the Provisional Specification, the secondary electrode 12 may form a continuation of the accelerator grid 10.
