[Class 39 (i)] The electrode assembly of an electron dis. charge device comprises a number of electrodes having central generally planar active portions, e.g. cathode 18 and 19, grid 25, anodes 27 and 16, with their marginal supporting portions interleaved between a number of annular insulating spacers 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. The whole stack is contained in an open-ended metal retaining member 6 whose end wall is in the form of an annular rib 33 for resilience and whose side walls 8, 9 terminate in flanges 10. A retaining cap 29 of similar structure completes the assembly, flanges 10 and 31 being welded together. A support member has upwardly extending portions 38, 39 terminating in flanges 40, 41 welded to the flanges of the retaining member. The bottom of this support has an outward flange 37 registering with the flange 36 of a metal header through which the lead-in conductors pass. An outer metal envelope 48 has a flange 49, all three flanges 36, 37, 49 being welded together. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) illustrate a modification which has two mutually insulated cathodes with a common heater.
