Abstract
613,013. Cable and wire terminals. AIRCRAFT-MARINE PRODUCTS, Inc. Feb. 12, 1945, Nos. 3503, 3504 and 3505. Convention dates, Dec. 14, 1943, Feb. 19, 1944 and Oct. 28, 1944. [Class 38 (i)] A rigid sleeve 13 of a tough, stiffly flexible plastic material resistant to flow at normal temperatures and having an " elastic memory," e.g. vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer, tightly embraces the ferrule 12 of a connector 10. The normal diameter of the sleeve is less than that of the ferrule and the sleeve is expanded mechanically or by heat or soaking in a suitable solvent until it may be slipped on the ferrule to overlap both ends. A bared conductor 20 is inserted in the ferrule and the sleeve 13, which may be coated with adhesive 14, surrounds the insulation. The sleeve diameter is reduced, preferably, by baking, and the connector and conductor are crimped together. The plastic gradually recovers from its deformation by the crimping tool and insulates the ferrule completely. Alternatively, Fig. 8, the sleeve is secured over the upturned back 10b of the connector which is then provided with a spear 25 to engage the conductor 20 which is secured tightly in position by the sleeve which may be shrunk or crimped on to the conductor covering 21. In a further modification, a metal tube 30 is secured by a cement 31 to the sleeve 13 to strengthen it. The ferrule 12 is prevented from opening at seam 17 by the sleeve and the plastic material flows back to cover the crimps A, B. In a still further modification (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), the plastic sleeve may be inserted in the metal sleeve. A suitable solvent is a 5 to 10 per cent tricresyl phosphate in benzene, and a suitable cement is a known composition of vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer with a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin and a synthetic polyhydric alcohol-phthalic anhydride resin in a solvent. Specifications 569,366, 570,064 and 572,620 are referred to.
