Abstract
612,490. Casting concrete walls. MACKIE, R. May 27, 1946, No. 15945. [Class 20(ii)] Shuttering for the manufacture of concrete cavity walls comprises panels 1 flanged at 2 along their vertical edges, uprights 3, 3A adapted to receive the flanged edges of the panels, means, e.g. keys 4, to hold the panels in place, separators 5 in the concrete receiving space to hold the uprights apart, and distance pieces 6 to hold apart the uprights 3A supporting the panels which form the faces of the cavity. Each panel consists of a wooden frame with sheet metal plating which projects on one face to form the flanges 2. The uprights 3 supporting the outer and inner panels are of T-section, presenting vertical flanges to the panels 1 and the keys 4. They may be linked together outside the shuttering during erection by metal strips. At the outer corners two T-section uprights at right angles are joined by angle pieces. At the inner corners the uprights are of angular crosssection. The uprights 3A are of rectangular section longitudinally grooved, and are erected in pairs with the grooves opposite and separated by the cruciform section distance pieces 6, the arms of which press the flanges 2 of the cavity panels against the uprights 3A. The distance pieces may be split longitudinally to facilitate withdrawal. The separators 5 may be pre-cast truncated cones of.concrete axially pierced for the tie-bolts 8. They are left embedded in the wall, and the tie-bolts replaced by bolts which engage wall ties inserted in the cavity. Recesses are cast for the heads of these bolts by placing blocks of wood between the separators 5 and the uprights 3. For a wall to be cast in one piece the cavity panels must be the full height of the wall to enable them to be withdrawn, but the inner and outer panels may be of any convenient height. A door or window opening may be made by a hollow rectangular core in the concrete receiving space. A string course or an ornamental dado may be formed by using panels configured as desired. The Provisional Specification mentions cams mounted on spindles for holding the panels in place, and cavity panels with rebated edges held together by hooks.
