Abstract

[Class 108 (iii)] Means for supporting are: ciprocating or oscillatory member comprises a plurality of bonded rubber sandwichlike supports, each consisting of two parts in V or inverted V arrangement as viewed transversely, so that longitudinal movement of the member is resisted only or mainly by shear of the rubber, 'while movement in all transverse directions is resisted by compression and/or tension of the rubber with or without a shear component. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the'body 8 may be supported at one or more points on either side by two rubber sandwich mountings 4, screwed to a base frame member 6. Alternatively, the two mountings may be of integral form, the rigid members being of V or inverted V-shape in cross-section. Metal plates arranged parallel with the bonded surfaces of the rigid members may be bonded in the rubber to increase the ratio of shear to compressive resistance. In side elevation, the rubber elements and corresponding bonded surfaces of the rigid members of the mountings 4, may be of rectilinear or curvilinear formation and may be inclined to the horizontal. A curved portion may be formed at one end to produce a lifting effect. When the surfaces are curved longitudinally the mountings on one side of the body may be so arranged that their respective surfaces have either common or different centres of curvature. Spigots or other registering means may be used to maintain coacting parts in their proper relative positions.
