Abstract

611,894. Impregnating-compositions for electrical insulation. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 13, 1946, No. 14411. Convention date, May 14, 1945. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXXV] Transformer, magneto and other electric coils are insulated with both thermosetting and thermoplastic polymeric materials intermixed. A coil 1 of wire insulated with enamel, paper or artificial resin, and wound with paper separators on a temporary or permanent former 2 of shellaccoated kraft paper, of artificial resin or of metal, is inserted in a temporary or permanent casing 5, which may be of metal. The space between the coil and casing is filled with finely divided thermoplastic material 14, the coil meanwhile being preferably vibrated. To prevent subsequent movement of this material it is heated to cause partial cohesion of the particles, or part of the space may be filled with puttylike permeable plastic masses 12, 13, 15, one of which, 13, may hold leads 3 in position, and another, 15, may seal the entry hole. The coil is impregnated under vacuum and pressure with a thermosetting solventless varnish which is polymerized by heat. The thermoplastic filler reduces shrinkage and liability to cracking during polymerization. Suitable thermosetting, thermoplastic and putty-like substances are named.
