[Class 78 (iii)] A lifting apparatus which moves with its load in either direction along a suspended chain, has a pair of chain . engaging claw levers pivoted to a hand lever which is reciprocated to move the claws link by link along the chain and is provided with means which may be moved in or out of engage. ment with the claw levers to control the direction of movement of the apparatus along the chain. In the embodiment shown, the hand lever 11, Fig. 1, carries pivoted claw levers 5, 6 and a load-engaging member 12, the claw ends 7, 8 of levers 5, 6 being urged together by a spring 17. Reciprocation of the lever 11 causes the levers 5, 6 to advance alternately one link at a time over opposite sides of the supporting chain, so lifting the load. The apparatus is set for its lowering operation by rotating through 90 degrees a bolt 22 to position projections 25, 26 to limit the outward movement of the claw levers. A spring-loaded detent pin 31 locates the bolt 22 in adjusted positions. Member 12 may be anchored to enable the chain to be drawn in or paid out.
